Ampersand

A coffee table drawing infinite meditative sand patterns
Design
Inspired by ever changing sea shores from around the world

Ampersand table combines the beauty of movement with fine materials and craftsmanship.

Technology is not a goal in itself, it's just one of the ingredients, complimenting the wood and concrete housing.

Philosophy
Watch the patterns develop in front of you

Under the glass tabletop a single steel ball silently travels through a layer of sand.

Complex algorithmic patterns emerge from a single trace in a steady, meditative process.

Control it the way you want

Select any of the curated tracks, browse through the community-created ones or design your own.

Use the intuitive app or get nerdy and program the table's movement in your favourite programming language.

No mics, no cameras
no data collection

Speaking of control, the operation is offline-first. No internet connection is required and there’s no external servers to rely on. You own the device in every sense.

The mechanism

The mechanism that drives Ampersand was designed from scratch to maximize your creative freedom and provide the smoothest experience possible.

The movement is controlled with sub-millimetre precision using the same components you’d find in a top-of-the line 3D printer.

Controller

The brain of the device is the powerful ESP32 microcontroller, allowing for concurrent control of movement and communication

Built to last

Longevity was a priority in the design process. Stainless steel and aluminum structural parts were produced with continuous, uninterrupted operation in mind. The mechanism is accessible and easy to customize or service.

A t Moving Pieces Studio we want to combine design and technology in a way that brings out the best both. We want to provide an alternative to the tech that fights for your attention with notifications and bright screens - the slow food of technology. Objects that are designed to inspire creativity and engage you in the process.
